The Hub/Cook County Senior Center Medical Equipment Loan Program

  • Donated, gently used medical equipment to borrow
  • Program is open to anyone in Cook County
  • Visitors to Cook County may borrow equipment to use while in the county, but it must be returned before they leave
  • Typical items available include wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, and other assistive medical equipment
  • No rental charge, but donations are always welcome

Lighthouse Center for Vital Living

  • Duluth-based organization that also serves Cook County
  • Provides services and equipment for people challenged by aging, vision loss or other disabilities
  • Services include device demos and loans, assistive technology training, and ongoing support
  • Devices (such as smartphones, tablets, computers, smart home, daily living aids and more) can be borrowed for up to 30 days to see if they will be helpful
  • Some services may be billed to medical insurance or waiver, or they may be offered free of charge; voluntary cost sharing may also be requested

Personal Emergency Response Medical Alert 

  • Land-line-based medical alert system 
  • System range limited to within the home and sometimes yard; coverage area will be ascertained at the time of installation
  • Pendant can be worn on the wrist or around the neck
  • One-time installation fee plus monthly service charge
  • Equipment is provided at no cost but remains the property of the Cook County Council on Aging
  • Equipment must be returned when service is discontinued

Project Lifesaver 

  • Provides transmitter to help local rescue agencies locate people with cognitive disorders who are prone to wandering
  • Doctor approval required to confirm that the program will be a good fit for the person/situation.
  • Program is paid for by the Sheriff’s office with no cost to enrollees (except for an equipment replacement charge if the transmitter is lost.)
  • Includes in-home monthly check-in to change out battery and make sure the system is in working order.

Statewide & National Programs/Resources:

QMedic Mobile Medical Alert 

  • Wireless-based cellular or mobile/GPS medical alert system
  • Cellular system range is approximately 1,000 feet from base unit
  • Mobile/GPS system range is anywhere within Verizon or AT&T service coverage area
  • Cell phone not needed for service, but ability to access cellular service is required
  • Annual subscription fee, although cost of service may be covered by insurance
  • No equipment or set-up fees
  • Equipment remains property of QMedic and must be returned when service is discontinued.

Minnesota System of Technology to Achieve Results (STAR) Program

  • Helps all Minnesotans with disabilities and functional needs gain access to and acquire the assistive technology they need to live, learn, work and play
  • Offer device demonstrations, loans and exchanges (sell, donate or buy used)
  • Items that may be available include computers/tablets, medical equipment, and phones/accessories
